Introduction to entrepreneurial thinking by Prof. Yiannis Bakouros, offered as an elective course at the Chemical Engineering Department of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

SCIENCE EDUCATION

Chemical Engineering Undergraduate, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, current GPA: 7.5/10
1,000 € research thesis grant awarded by Mindspace
Thesis supervisor: Associate Professor Dr. Amalia Aggeli

Thesis title: “Implementation of the biodesign innovation process to the problem of dental plaque with the development of novel solutions based on natural products”.

Emphasis on biomedical engineering, nanomedicine, natural products, minimally invasive medicine and bioentrepreneurship. Took some gap semesters in between, initiating the 1st ever startup community inside the university from scratch, so as to cultivate the entrepreneurial spirit missing from the traditional curriculums, that is necessary for the future economic growth of Greece, while trying to adapt to hardships and grow resilience, and happily discovering my passion: making human lives more equal and healthier.

After this small discovery, I approached the chemical engineering classes as a pre-med program, since before most of them seemed not that much interesting, given my interest in business. Realising, though, the time and effort required for growing a business through hands-on experience gained during starting and running my own non-profit, it made sense to devote this time and effort in bio-business and make an impact on providing better and more equal healthcare.

Learning Creative Learning, MIT Media Lab, life-long learning

A community of educators, designers, and tinkerers exploring creative learning through projects, passion, peers, and play. Emphasis on understanding the process of creativity and the role of human interaction and influence in shaping the creative mechanisms of mentees and mentors. Non-degree granting, online life-long learning program.

LEADERSHIP IN SCIENTIFIC ORGANISATIONS

The Triple Helix, Chief Operating Officer, 2015 – 2017

The Triple Helix is a non-profit, student-run organisation with chapters all over the world, whose aim is to spread the word about science and its impact on society. I was responsible for all European chapters as COO during the academic year 2016 – 2017 and also worked as Director of Alumni Relations during the academic year 2015 – 2016.

The Triple Helix Aristotle, Founder, 2014 – 2017

Establishment of The Triple Helix Aristotle chapter took place in October 2014. I served as Chapter Leader for 2 years, motivating students to unleash their creativity and form high ambitions through their participation in the team, while expanding the vision of the organisation from science communication and publishing to the inclusion of entrepreneurial teaching by initiating The Triple Helix InnovationLab, the first entrepreneurial hub inside Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Through InnovationLab, I increased the organisation’s reach by 900%, involving over 200 students in these weekly startup meetings, compared to the ca. 25 semi-regular members we had before.

IEEE EMBS AUTH, Collaborator, 2017

As an early stage biotechnology researcher with a special focus on bioentrepreneurship, great experience in managing science communication organisations and a wide network of entrepreneurial connections, I contributed to the IEEE EMBS student chapter at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, in order to communicate the great values one reflects when involved with making people’s lives better through novel biological ventures.
